Dive Deeper: Conservation in Action (11th November 2026)

Dive into conservation in action this November with our final instalment of Dive Deeper for 2026.

Enjoy a unique opportunity to connect with science through listening to inspiring and accessible talks delivered in a relaxed setting.

Hearing from 3 expert speakers, attendees can expect to uncover deeper insights into The Deep’s own conservation projects as well as a closer look into how stories over time have shaped nearby attraction, Dumble Farm, into the organisation it is today. There’s even the opportunity to get involved in hands-on interaction, helping attendees learn more about conservation choices.

Preserving The Upwelling: Long Term Conservation at Punta San Juan

Lloyd Wilkinson, Senior Aquarist & Penguin Keeper, The Deep

Begin the evening hearing from Senior Aquarist Lloyd as he shares his incredible experience working on the frontline of conservation at the Punta San Juan Reserve in Peru. This isolated site is home to many seabirds and marine mammals, including the iconic Humboldt penguin. Discover how conservationists balance protecting vulnerable wildlife with supporting local communities that rely on the sustainable harvesting of guano. Learn how focused dedicated conservation efforts are helping to safeguard this unique coastal ecosystem for generations to come.

Dumble Farm Conservation - the story so far...!

Fiona Wilson, Director, Dumble Farm

Next, Fiona, Director of Dumble Farm, shares how moving from a dairy farming business that struggled to survive with the current climate changes and economic situations, Dumble Farm set out on a new venture, 'farming for wildlife'. Over the past 4 years, the farm has been transformed into a haven for declining species, funded by a leisure business focused on Highland cows. The farm has created new wetlands, has joined with wildlife organisations and other local businesses, become a research resource, has achieved awards for conservation initiatives and been chosen as the best experience in the county for 'cow cuddling'. This is the story of three farmers with a big dream and their successes and struggles so far.

How to Save the World 2 - Now it's Your Turn!

Dr Robert Bullock, Head of Conservation, The Deep

Rounding off the evening, attendees will join Dr Rob Bullock, Head of Conservation, for a crash course in biodiversity conservation. We’ll explore how scientists work out which species are most at risk, what deserves our attention, and how we make some pretty tricky decisions when we can’t save everything at once. Using the principles of the IUCN Red List, we’ll take-a-peek behind the conservation curtain before putting you in the hot seat for some hands-on, audience-powered species assessment. Expect big questions, tough choices, a little scientific detective work, and the chance to discover whether you’ve got what it takes to help save the world!

Whether you’re an ocean lover, a budding scientist, or simply curious, Dive Deeper promises to be an evening packed full of insight and wonder.
